ruby-marc, now with MARC-8 support

A new version of the ruby ‘marc’ gem has been released, tagged 0.8.0.

This version supports finally supports transcoding MARC-8 to UTF-8. I did a pretty direct port of python pymarc’s algorithm for MARC-8->UTF-8 transcoding. Much thanks to the developers of pymarc for providing such a clean implementation, good test cases, and help on IRC. Including asl2, edsu, gsf, and anarchivist.

(0.8.0? Shouldn’t we have called it 1.0 a long time ago? Probably. But now nobody’s got the confidence to decide at what point it should be called 1.0, ha.)
